ECCH – the MBA case-study library

September 26, 2009

It is commonly known that MBA studies are largely based on case studies and we at ESADE have already gone through many as of today. Last Friday during our class of “Corporate Citizenship” our professor has drawn our attention to ecch organization. This a great (apparently the largest) collection of business management case studies that are relevant for the MBA and therefore an invaluable resource for us MBA students. I guess it is best if I let ecch explain itself:

ecch offers the largest and most up-to-date collection of management case study materials to be found anywhere in the world, as well as a reprint service for a growing number of leading international management journals. ecch is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting and facilitating case study based learning in management education and development. It was established by the business school community to fulfill its needs to provide a mechanism for publishing and distributing case study materials. The ecch case collection and facilities are unrivalled throughout the world.

ecch supports the writing and teaching of cases from its offices at Cranfield University in the UK and Babson College in the USA. Widely recognised as the foremost independent provider of training in the case method worldwide, ecch runs regular workshops for case teachers and writers. It also offers scholarships and awards for successful case authors. ecch produces and supplies publications and books on the case method.

Semester 2, Term 3

September 14, 2009

I am back!!! The holiday is over and the travelling has been great but today the classes start again and life becomes serious again. The new cohort of the Flexible MBA 2011 have already started two weeks ago but classes graduating in March 2010, which are the One Year MBA and the 18months MBA together, are all back again this week.

This week we have the course called “INTOP Strategic Business Simulation“, which seems to be a very interesting simulation. This INTOP Simulation was developed by Professors Hans B. Thorelli and Robert L. Graves of the University of Chicago in 1964 and fully developed with the 1970s with Professor Lloyd T. Howells. This simulation has been developed, adapted and updated for the last 45 years and seems to very sophisticated.

We will be split up in teams that will act as one company and we will compete against the others 8 teams (companies) in real life scenarios. Throughout this course we will identify our strengths and weaknesses and see how we can cope with strategic and operational mistakes and success. We have a great week ahead.

The MBA Oath

June 29, 2009

I just received this message on the ESADE LinkedIn Group and I prefer not to comment. This message is not from me. I just copy+pasted it here:

I urge all MBA alumni past and present to please read the MBA Oath and take it.
Please register at :

THE MBA OATH

As a manager, my purpose is to serve the greater good by bringing people and resources together to create value that no single individual can create alone. Therefore I will seek a course that enhances the value my enterprise can create for society over the long term. I recognize my decisions can have far-reaching consequences that affect the well-being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and in the future. As I reconcile the interests of different constituencies, I will face choices that are not easy for me and others.

Therefore I promise:

  • I will act with utmost integrity and pursue my work in an ethical manner.
  • I will safeguard the interests of my shareholders, co-workers, customers and the society in which we operate.
  • I will manage my enterprise in good faith, guarding against decisions and behavior that advance my own narrow ambitions but harm the enterprise and the societies it serves.
  • I will understand and uphold, both in letter and in spirit, the laws and contracts governing my own conduct and that of my enterprise.
  • I will take responsibility for my actions, and I will represent the performance and risks of my enterprise accurately and honestly.
  • I will develop both myself and other managers under my supervision so that the profession continues to grow and contribute to the well-being of society.
  • I will strive to create sustainable economic, social, and environmental prosperity worldwide.
  • I will be accountable to my peers and they will be accountable to me for living by this oath.
  • This oath I make freely, and upon my honor.

Dilbert and the Business Life

June 9, 2009

After the financial crisis there are many descriptions about business studies floating around because most of the big business failures where caused by MBA graduates. My favorite one are that MBA stands for “Mediocre But Arrogant” or “Married But Available”. I guess it is important that from time to time you have a good laugh about yourself and I agree that some of the case studies are quite irrelevant for the real business world. The comic artist “Dilbert” created a whole series of comics making fun of MBA students like us and they are hilarious. Check out his blog BEFORE you start your MBA and do it better ;)

The One Year MBA is history

June 4, 2009

When we first started our One Year MBA program (OY MBA) we knew that it would be the last time that ESADE runs this intense course in April. From now on all MBA programs are “flexible” meaning that the students can chose whether they wany to graduate in 12,15 or 18 months. Now it has become reality and there are no more references to the one year MBA program in the ESADE website below:

http://www.esade.edu/mba/eng/the_mba_programmes

The original differentiating factor between the OY MBA starting in April, which required more experience and exposure, and the 18 month progam has diminished it seems. However an interesting debate amongst ourselves about this differentiation and competitive advantage last night showed that there is not really much of a difference. What is important though is that ESADE still highlights that the One Year MBA is for the more experienced and caters for those who don’t require another internship and/or exchange program. When this is communicated properly the image of the OY MBA course will remain the same eventually.

In any case however all of us current OY students who started in April 2009 are the last batch of the dedicated 1 year MBA called ESADE MBA OY 2010 and we are proud to be so. I suggest that we start taking the photos in sepia and play melancholic music in our classroom to enhance the nostalgia ;).

Thank you Sid for pointing that out!

Networking and Social Media

March 18, 2009

One of the main reasons to start the MBA is arguably to expand the personal and professional network. During the Open Day in January 2009 ESADE has presented itself to undertake numerous measures to strengthen this connection among students, one of which would have to be the extensive team work in the classrooms itself. Presentations and team projects are said to be structured in a way that it is never apparent beforehand who will be presenting in the end. Every team member needs to be prepared to such depth that each one could hold the presentation and represent the teamwork at any point in time. This uncertainty unites the team in a unique fashion because the strongest will always have to support the weakest in order to survive. Nobody will be left behind and students work together instead of against each other.

The social networking among the students is highly important as well because in order for a relationship to last, the students must be wanting to stay in touch with one another. Usually the first encounter and interaction of the students is the Introductory Week prior to the course begin however a new trend has come to my attention. The power of the social networking tools on the internet has accelerated this process and most of the students are already in touch before heading to Barcelona. Facebook seems to be the most used social platform for ESADE students at the moment to facilitate this interaction. Almost every MBA intake has its own Facebook Group where the members are actively interacting and sharing information, especially regarding accomodation arrangements, transport, mobile phone offers and other useful subject (Check out the ESADE bookmarks on Delicious). Have a look at the group at the ESADE One Year MBA Class 2010 and you will see what I mean. ESADE is also using  twitter, a microblogging tool, to communicate news.
