Cinemas in Original Language (V.O.S.)

There are many cinema fans among us however not everybody speaks fluent Spanish or Catalan to watch all the movies in Spanish. Therefore I have aggregated a small list of cinemas that also show the movies in the original language with Spanish subtitles. When you are looking for movies in the original language you have to look for the abbreviation V.O.S., which stands for the original versions of the movies.

Room To Read – Twitter Partnership

October 13, 2009

I have been a fan of the NGO Room to Readfor a few years now and I think that the cause they are fighting for is the noblest of all:  Education. In my opinion when you provide education the world will become a better place. This is not philantrophic but illiteracy and lack of education is the origin of many problems. The NGO is stringently run with transparent accounting and minimal overhead at the same time. To find out more about “Room to Read” visit their website here.

The following is an invitation  that Room to Read invites to, which I would like to help them promote. The following content is provided by Room-to-Read:

Hello Room to Read supporters!

We’ve got a bit of a tweecret :)

While the details are still being kept under wraps, Room to Read and Twitter are embarking on a special partnership that will take place over the course of next year.

The specifics will be announced and celebrated on Thursday, October 15 just in time for Room to Read’s San Francisco Chapter benefit being held at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, Green Room.

Additionally, Room to Read’s Austin Chapter will be hosting an event on the same night and will be celebrating the same news via video!

Details about both events are below as well as well as information on purchasing tickets. Given the news, both events will sell-out so be sure to get your ticket now. If you’re not in the area, be sure to forward on this message to your contacts in San Francisco and Austin!

Room to Read has gained over 100,000 followers since Twitter announced the partnership last month and added us to their suggested users list. Follow all our news @roomtoread and you can all follow founder John Wood at @JohnWoodRTR.

The ESADE Fun Regatta

October 12, 2009

The ESADE Fun Regatta is ON! On the 24th of October there will be a regatta with 40 feet boats in front of the Port Olympic, Barcelona. This regatta is aimed at people who like to sail but have not necessarily sailed a regatta before. Of course if you have sailed regattas before, then this event is also for you.

Each boat will fit a team of 7 plus a skipper supplied by the boat rental company. But he doesn’t need to be the skipper during the regatta, whatever his role it’s up to you and your team. He is just there for safety and to help bring the boats into port after the event. So quickly form up your team of 7 people and come and join us for a fun day of sailing.

We will start sailing at 11 and head into the sea. We will have some practice sailing so everybody gets familiar with the boats and then we will have two regattas. The best of both races will be the winner of the day.

The price of 460 Euros per boat also includes the skipper. As mentioned, you can fit up to 7 people in a boat (that would be a total of 8 including the skipper) so the price per person will be 66 Euros.

The schedule will be the following:
10:00 Arrival at the meeting point
10:30 Captain’s Meeting and boat distribution
11:00 We start heading out to sea
11:30 Sailing practice and team building (get your team ready for the regatta)
12:00 First Regatta
13:30 Second Regatta
14: 15 Boats head back to the dock
15:00 The event ends

ESADE dances Salsa

October 10, 2009

Hola students,

With the return of the Salsa season, we would like to inform you of some activities that will help you relax and make the most of your MBA experience.

First of all, everyone is welcome to join the club on Facebook here.

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or expert, we can arrange Salsa classes for all levels and negociate discount prices for ESADE students. There are several schools in Barcelona. So far we have been training at “Buenavista” next to Mojito club (carrer del Rossello, 217, metro Provença).

Should you be interested in Salsa, please fill out the following spreadsheet to indicate your experience level and provide your contact information here.

A new president will be elected in November to run the club as well as select and prepare a team for 2 major Salsa events: “Spring Fling” (a sport competition organized by IESE in Barcelona – March 2010) and MBAT (MBA Tournament, organized by HEC in Paris – May 2010).

Last year, the ESADE Salsa club participated to the MBAT event in Paris, and our performance can be seen on YouTube here and hereto below. We hope that ESADE will present a team for both Spring Fling and MBAT events next year.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me and I will forward it to David from the ESADE Salsa Club.

Barcelona – Insider Tips

October 9, 2009

After having spent some time here in Barcelona I thought it was time to share my favorite spots and activities in the city, which has so much to offer. These are truly my favorite spots and I hope that you get to enjoy them as well! Feel free to add any other tips you might have.

Cafes:

Rambla de Raval /47: “Madame Jasmine” and across the road “Cafe de les Delicies”. Cafe “Lobo” behind the Hotel 1898 on La Ramblas (Carrer del Pintor Fortuny 3, Barcelona)

Bars:

Cavaria (Xampagneria) – Metro Barceloneta: C/ Reina Cristina 3, 08003 Barcelona. This cavaria is a special place because it is run by the unions. The place is incredibly packed, extremely cheap and has a great atmosphere. As it is run by the unions it will close at 10.30 pm sharp!

Restaurants:

4 Ghats – famous for the world-known guests and visitors  (Pablo Picasso among others)

Quarters:

“Barrio Gotico”, “El Born”, “Rambla de Raval”, “Sarria”

Activities

The Jazz-Catameran-Cruise on the Catamaran-Orsom:

Sights:

Catedral, Sagrada Familia, Barceloneta beaches, Montjuic, Picasso Museum (if I am not wrong some of the museums should be for free on the first Sundays of every month but don’t quote me on that)

The tourist bus trip: BusTouristic (ca. 21 Euros). This is not actually a really good way to discover Barcelona and I have discovered some great spots which I haven’t heard of before.

I have dedicated these insider tips an entire page now, which you can find here on the right.

October 7, 2009
Student led donation drive for the victims of Typhoon Ketsana (also called Typhoon Ondoy) in the Philippines. It is a joint effort of students and alumni all over the world including: Columbia, Harvard, INSEAD, MIT, Stanford, UPenn/Wharton, Audencia Nantes SOM, London Business School, University of New South Wales, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, SMU, IESE, AGSM, Berkeley, Yale, Babson, NYU, ESADE, Tuck, Purdue and others.

More on Typhoon Ketsana:
Sept. 26, 2009 – typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines. The tragedy claimed more than 140 lives and displaced over 430,000 people. It’s the worst flooding recorded in the country since 1967. Manila and surrounding areas were lashed with heavy rains and flash floods for nine hours, leaving some areas under 20 feet of water. The capital and 23 other provinces have been declared under a STATE OF CALAMITY. Many people are missing or trapped and numerous areas are still submerged in floodwater. More than 1.2 million people have no electricity. Victims are in dire need of basic relief goods like food, water and clothing. The death toll is expected to climb, and so are the number of missing and injured.

There are numerous sports initiative at ESADE, one of which is rugby. I am a great fan of this sport myself and there are many others who have now teamed up to play rugby more or less seriously. There will be a training sesson next Monday, 12th October, on Mar Bella Beach at around 14h. We will be playing on the beach just behind the rugby pitch. (Metro: “Poble Nou”). Google map location is here.

As we are looking at playing more seriously we suggest to bring some mouthguards. According to the main coordinator “we will start with some proper practice and contact” so we are looking forward to a nice game.

“Those who Remain” is a film about the families of those who have crossed the border to the United States in search of better opportunities. A film that explores the melancholy, memories and identity of those who remain, who continue to wait, to love and to dream. A film about absence, about the families whose lives are defined by the voids emigration has created.

[Update on 26.09.2009: check out the program in English here]

Today is the festival for the Virgin of la Merce, the Patron Saint of Barcelona, is a truelly great experience. (View the history of la Merce here ).Entire Barcelona is celebrating its culture and there is a lot of it everywhere. There are numerous parades in overlarge sizes, fireworks, concerts, the famous human towers (that I have been mentioning several times) and much more. The festival started last night and will continue until Sunday. Head to the city and just let yourself flow with the people and enjoy all those cultural activities.

Every year the festival is dedicated to a partner city and this year the guest and partner of honor is the city Istanbul. Taking advantage of this great occasion some friends and me went to the concert of Baba Zula last night. Have a look at this video to get in the mood:

Barcelona – MoleskineCity

July 8, 2009

For the Moleskine fans among you there is a MoleskineCity for Barcelona. I have one of these city notebooks and I am writing my own city guide with my own recommendations, addresses, sites, etc. The Moleskine also has city center maps and a Metro map, which is very useful. Check it out here.

Barcelona on two-wheels!

July 3, 2009

Quite a few of you are considering renting or buying a scooter or motorbike during your time here in Barcelona. There is a hardly a more liberating feeling than cruising around on two wheels and it is definitely a passion of mine, although I don’t currently ride a motorbike here (yet). However not many are very familiar with riding motorbikes and think that it is as easy as riding a bike, which definitely not true.

I peronally have reasonable experience in riding motorbikes and therefore I would like to just quick remind you of the key issues when riding a motorbike, which the majority of students and friends are disregarding as I can see everyday:

  1. The most difficult driving is driving in walking pace and not full speed. Practice it!
  2. Secondly knowing how to breaking is key! It requires a lot of training for the wheels not to lock up.
  3. Keep the front tyre straight when breaking because the main braking force is on the front tyre. When you front wheel is not straight it will twist and when it twists it will bring you to a “grinding” stillstand, on the ground!!
  4. When you drive fast and then fall the first thing that touches ground is your chin!!!! Open-face helmets, like the MOMO-Design helmets, might look cool but losing the face from the nose downwards and scraping off the bottom jaw is not cool. I got to see accident photos of that and it is awful to be disfigured for the rest of your life because you wanted to look cool. Buy a helmet with chin protection!
  5. When you are “lucky” the second body part that touches the ground are your hands! One of our classmates learnt about this the hard way! Wear leather gloves, ALWAYS!
  6. The third body part touching ground usually are your feet and you will be amazed how easily those toes are ripped off! Wear proper shoes!
  7. On the road the positioning in the lane is very important and make sure that you always drive in either tyre track and not in the middle. The middle collects dust and dirt. Secondly you have to defend your lane in order not being pushed off your lane by cars. When you are not determined you can easily follow steps 2 – 6 if you are not careful.
  8. Never break on road markings because they are extremely slippery otherwise you will follow steps 2 – 6 if you are not careful.

Enjoy Barcelona on a two-wheeler but don’t be stupid and dress properly! You wonder what this has to do with a MBA? How do you think most people drive to the school?
