February 9, 2010

10.000th view of my blog “My ESADE MBA“*! Who would have guessed that? I am celebrating a little :) Thank you very much for your support and readership!!!

I started to blog about my ESADE experience in Feburary 2009 in the wake of my application for a scholarship.  However once the scholarship application was rejected I decided to continue the blogging nevertheless because I enjoyed doing it.  (btw. some of those who received the scholarship are blogging on the ESADE blog)

Considering that today I have finally reached the 5-digit-views for MyESADEMBA blog I decided that I would give you some more insights about this blog and ESADE in general through my statistics. The statistics give you a very good overview of what people are interested in and what they like to read about ESADE.  Let’s see what we’ve got:

There are tons of more interesting stats such as these but that might be a little too much. What fascinates me most is the interest, almost obsession, in the rankings, comparisons against other schools and interview questions. What I don’t understand is that so many people are obsessed with the rankings and placements of ESADE students but why do I see so few candidates visiting the campus and enquiring about the life as ESADE students? Is that all there is to a school? Visit the campus, speak to the students, attend lectures… Ask me ;) I am looking forward to seeing you all on campus and happy readership :)

Career Services’ reactions and promises…

February 2, 2010

After two meetings with the Career Services yesterday it seems that your feedback on the article had an impact.  It is not quite official yet but the following changes are planned for the coming days and weeks:

  • An official statement of the Management
  • Restructuring of the Career Services (apparently there will be a re-allocation of responsibilites)
  • Implementation of clear processes and K.PERFORMANCE.Is beyond staff-student ratios based on the recommendations of a famous consultancy  (not sure why a Business School spends money on a consultancy but…)
  • Survey for Career Week
  • Migration of discussion to Nexus to open up further “internal” dialogue
  • Workshops with students on how to strengthen Career Services
  • Renaming of Career Week to “Career Forum
  • More in-depth company briefings prior to campus visits
  • Differentiating between company and recruitment presentation
  • A stronger focus on developing company relationships with student clubs and academia
  • Publication of a clear hierarchical structure incl. responsibility allocations (should be expanded across the school in my opinion)
  • More transparency and new faster feedback policies
  • Publication of recruitment/interview statistics
  • and a few more…

Obviously not all of these are a result of the blog article and coincide with some changes that have been planned anyhow but it is a good development in any case.

These are all high aspirations and it is important that they are being implemented however most probably this will take some time.  However I still hope and think that it is important that the outgoing students see the changes implemented before leaving in two months.

On the other side we still have to acknowledge that they always put in a lot of efforts into attracting companies to campus, organising the career week, etc. And  you can’t honestly expect them to offer you placements. We do all need to be proactive ourselves. The crisis is bad for placements but that’s was already clear when we started, no?

In any case the latest discussions and feedback from us students have been heard. Let’s see and good job hunting!!

Government Bonds not risk-free?

January 9, 2010

I just read a very interesting article in the Financial Times, written by Michael Gordon the former CIO for Fidelity international, which questions the risk-free nature of government bonds. This is quite fascinating as government bonds were the last investments that were considered “risk-free” or at least so we have been taught. However with the recent near bankruptcies of Greece and Dubai this reputation of investments in governments to be “risk-free” is now seriously threatened.

In relation to my previous article (here) about the need for new investment and financial theories because investors obviously do not act rationally in reality, the news about government bonds is quite stunning. I had already expressed my interest in alternative banking systems like “Islamic banking“, which has been gaining significant attention lately.

Considering that two of the most important underlying notions for the current financial theories are invalid, I am extremely curious what new schools of thought will come out of this crisis. Does ESADE have the capabilities to come up with alternatives? I truly hope so and that I can still experience it. What do you think?

ESADE Marketing

December 30, 2009

After being flooded with online advertising from other MBA schools I thought it would be worthwhile checking out the online advertising of the ESADE MBA.

First of all I am seeing that ESADE is starting with banner advertising as you can see on Business Week. Unfortunately the ad is placed on a quite disadvantageous article, stating that online advertising produces very few clicks, however I am glad to see that ESADE is becoming active. They haven’t taught much about online marketing in Marketing Class but apparently they are starting to do it themselves, which is a good move.

ESADE banner advertising

In addition I noticed that the ESADE Marketing team started to buy Google adwords and is promoting the ESADE Marketing Master as you can see hereto below when I searched for ESADE. I left the URL behind the ad so if you want to find out where it leads you click on it.

I am not sure whether it makes a lot of sense to advertise on the keyword “ESADE” as all the search results are direct ESADE links anyway but I am glad to see that ESADE is doing something! Keep it up!! Have you found any other online ads and/or banners of ESADE?

Javier Solana joins ESADE

December 15, 2009

ESADE announces that Javier Solana, the former “High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Secretary General of both the Council of the European Union (EU) and the Western European Union (WEU) for ten years (1999-2009)”* is joining ESADE in 2010. He will be the President of the new Centre for Global Economics and Geopolitics at ESADE’s Business School.

This is great news and we are looking forward to receiving him in 2010.

FT European Business School Rank 2009

December 10, 2009

The Financial Times has published the ranking of the European Business Schools  2009. ESADE has gone up in the rankings from 11th in 2008 to 8th in 2009 in the overall rank. The overall rank is established as a combination of the MBA, EMBA and Masters in Business rankings.  The ESADE MBA ranks 7th in Europe  in 2009,  the EMBA is not ranked and the Masters in Business is ranked number 8.

This reflects another steady increase in the rankings of the ESADE Business School and I am anxiously looking forward to seeing the MBA rank of 2010.  For the last 4 years ESADE has steadily increased by 3 ranks every year, which is reflected again in this ranking, and therefore we all hope that this trend continues. Touch wood!

The following are the top 5 business schools in Europe. For the full listing click here (download).

BarcelonaSinLadrones.org – Initiative against Barcelona’s pickpockets

December 7, 2009

Hello everybody,

after starting the Facebook Group and talking to many people it seems there is a strong interest among the community to assist in the fight against Barcelona’s pickpockets and thiefs. Since we have launched this website even more people have been robbed, and in incident the thieves have also been arrested, so the trend continues.

In order to extend the reach of this initiative I have set up a website called http://www.barcelonasinladrones.org to gain more public access. ESADE MBA Class of 2010 graduating 2012

December 2, 2009

It seems that the first students have been admitted for the ESADE MBA intake in 2010 graduating in 2012. The Facebook group “The ESADE MBA class 2012″ (join here) has already been launched so feel free to join and start exchanging tips, networking and  getting to know each other. It is early however the MBA is a large investment and therefore there cannot be enough preparation. Check out my page “Pre-MBA Readings” as a first start.

Happy networking and congratulations to those that have been admitted!!!

IIM-A places all students in four days

November 9, 2009

———————————————————————————————————————————

Update [27.11.2009]: I spoke to professors of IIM-B today, who are visiting ESADE this week. They confirmed that all the numbers and facts refer to MBA students and full-time positions. This was not sure previously but now it is! Apparently the figures are also the same for IIM-B, hence congratulations to both IIM’s.

———————————————————————————————————————————

I would like to share this article from the India Times with you because it is impressive (thank you for the information, Romit). We have just completed our Career Week 2009 at ESADE ourselves as have most other Business Schools around the world. With the flat world we are living in ESADE is competing with the universities around the world.

One of those universities is the Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Have a look at those facts because they are impressive:

  • Placed all 321 students in four days
  • Investment banks made 77 offers on Day Zero (first day)
  • 76 students received offers oversears (eg. US, France, Germany, the UK, the Middle-East, Africa and Southeast Asia)
  • McKinsey & Co, Boston Consulting Group and Bain & Co placed 3-5 students each
  • We are experiencing a Financial Crisis!!!!

I think that those figures are quite stunning and have set the bar high for other universities. This also exemplifies the quality of the Indian universities and students. The statistics for ESADE are not available to me but I would love to them know them.

  10. esade marketing career

I have received an increasing amount of personal emails, questions and enquiries about ESADE, the MBA and myself. A few issues keep popping up and I wanted to share my thoughts about some of these with you:

  • Many people are enquiring about entrepreneurship and marketing, which highlights the fact that ESADE is still famous for these, which also reflected in the statistics.
  • Yes, ESADE is focusing increasingly on Finance and Consulting
  • Yes, the fact that ESADE is famous for producing entrepreneurs makes it complicated to score on the salary-related aspects of the MBA rankings because usually entrepreneurs don’t earn that much at the start-up phase.
  • Barcelona plays an important role for people chosing ESADE
  • Why did I chose ESADE over IESE, IE and LBS? I will dedicate an article about this soon. Bear with me
  • What is the quality of the teaching, professors and course material?
  • Who is writing this blog, why and whether I have a link to ESADE? I would like to refer to the page About MYESADEMBA and reinforce that I have NOT received a scholarship from ESADE for writing this blog and I am free what I post here. To(un)bias-ed ;)

I wanted to thank you all for your support, comments and readership! I  hope that I keep helping you in answering some of the questions that you have been asking yourself about ESADE and the MBA. Please don’t hesitate to spread the word about the blog and happy reading :)
