Start-up Weekend in BCN: iWeekend (20.-22.11.09)

November 9, 2009

The worldwide phenomena of start-up weekends has reached Barcelona. iWeekend is taking place in Barcelona on the weekend of the 20th until the 22nd of November 2009. This event was mentioned in the entrepreneurship aggregator I posted a few days ago but I would like to emphasize this particular event a little further:

Start-up weekends are events for entrepreneurs, who meet over an entire weekend, with the goal to have developed a business concept by the end of the weekend. This is similar to an un-conference or user generated conference that leverages the drive, motivation and creativity of the users. On Sunday night hopefully the result is a start-up with like-minded people.

This is definitely worthwhile experiencing and you should check it out here! Happy creations!

I have received an increasing amount of personal emails, questions and enquiries about ESADE, the MBA and myself. A few issues keep popping up and I wanted to share my thoughts about some of these with you:

  • Many people are enquiring about entrepreneurship and marketing, which highlights the fact that ESADE is still famous for these, which also reflected in the statistics.
  • Yes, ESADE is focusing increasingly on Finance and Consulting
  • Yes, the fact that ESADE is famous for producing entrepreneurs makes it complicated to score on the salary-related aspects of the MBA rankings because usually entrepreneurs don’t earn that much at the start-up phase.
  • Barcelona plays an important role for people chosing ESADE
  • Why did I chose ESADE over IESE, IE and LBS? I will dedicate an article about this soon. Bear with me
  • What is the quality of the teaching, professors and course material?
  • Who is writing this blog, why and whether I have a link to ESADE? I would like to refer to the page About MYESADEMBA and reinforce that I have NOT received a scholarship from ESADE for writing this blog and I am free what I post here. To(un)bias-ed ;)

I wanted to thank you all for your support, comments and readership! I  hope that I keep helping you in answering some of the questions that you have been asking yourself about ESADE and the MBA. Please don’t hesitate to spread the word about the blog and happy reading :)

Event: ‘Meet the Serial Entrepreneur and VC’

October 23, 2009

The entrepreneurship club hosts the guest speaker Christopher Pommerening (blog, twitter) Founder and Managing Partner of Active Capital Partners S.L. today.

I will let him introduce himself:

“I started my professional career in Spain in 1998 co-founding AutoScout24 Spain as CEO and member of the Board of Directors. AutoScout24 is part of the Scout24 Group, Europe’s leading operator of virtual market places. I was appointed Managing Director of Scout24 Spain in 2001. While preparing the internationalisation (FriendScout24) of the Scout24 Group , I also created B24 Networks (Boot24.com), a Europe wide market place on the internet for the yachting sector.

In 2002 I decided to join my friend and partner Philipp Schroeder at our already established venture catalyst company VCMORE GmbH and devote myself full time to Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship by offering consulting and investment services to start-ups through our contact network in Europe and the US of consultants, business angels and industry specialists. Alongside the latter, in 2002, I co-founded EO Spain, the Spanish chapter of EO Entrepreneurs’ Organization, being one of the largest entrepreneur organisations in the world, and in the same year I co-founded Active Capital Partners.

In 2006 my fellow EO Members elected me to be the Ambassador for EO Europe, in order to foster Entrepreneurship in Europe and grow the organisation in 10 different countries.

In 2007 I created the terminology for Venturepreneurship and Venturepreneurs and together with my partners we created the concept for the Venturepreneurs’ Organisation.

In 2008 I initiated the Global Entrepreneurs Week in Spain and I founded the Barcelona Entrepreneurship City Community, in order to promote Barcelona to become one of the leading Hubs for entrepreneurship in Europe.

Currently I’m a member of the Board of Directors of Vinus & Brindis , Polymita Technologies, BuyVIP and Non Executive Co-Founder and Advisor of Linqia.”

Operations Club – Step 1

June 12, 2009

There are numerous student clubs under the roof of MBASA (ESADE student association) such as the consulting club, marketing club, entrepreneurship club, net impact chapter, renewable energy club etc. however one was missing: Operations Club!

At first we were considering starting a Supply Chain Management Club (SCM) however we quickly realised that it was too specific and our keen interest exceeded SCM. The idea of creating the “Operations Club” was born.  We thought it imperative to start this club particulary when taking into consideration that ESADE offers a particular Master of Operations and ESADE ranks 15 globally in Operations Management education.

However we have been experiencing a lot of difficulties starting this club and the bureaucracy of ESADE is showing its ugly side. Not only has the application process to start this club been extremely slow and tedious but no we are even faced with almost unreasonable requirements that we need to fulfill to start this club.

Now we need your support so this initiative can take off and please contact us through LinkedIN if you have an interest in Operations Management and want to join the club (in order to get it started :). This is real intrapreneurship!

The official LinkedIN Group is here.

Accomodation – ESADE Entrepreneurship

April 20, 2009

A former ESADE student turned entrepreneur and offers a special relocation service for incoming students. Check it out and make use of this great opportunity to benefit from ESADE entrepreneurship.

Hola OneYear MBA Class of 2010! Bienvenidos a ESADE!

I have just graduated with the ESADE MBA Class of 2009. Recently, I designed a customised relocation package for incoming Masters students, in partnership with BornLiving, a reputable Real Estate agency here in Barcelona. We will be offering apartments in ideal locations with customised/flexible leases for MBAs, and great discounts including a large discount on scooters if you decide to relocate with us. The agency fee is 1 months rent, which is the lowest rate on the market here.

I will be managing this process from end to end, so I promise you a high level of service, good guidance and advice, and a property that will make your lifestyle more enjoyable in Barcelona.

More info at: http://www.bornliving.com/services/graduate/
Or contact me at: graduate@bornliving.com

I hope to hear from you in the future or perhaps we will cross paths in ESADE soon :)))

ESADE Entrepreneurship

March 5, 2009

During the ESADE OpenDay at the end of January 2009 it became apparent that there is a large shift in future employment trends. What used be the ladder to the Management Consultancy, the MBA apparently has evolved to become the breeding ground for start-ups. The Financial Crisis most probably has had its fair impact on that trend, shifting the student’s interest from Finance to Business, which is a very positive side-effect from the crisis.

Some of the applicants have even mentioned that they are preparing to set-up their business after the MBA, which is a good sign and speaks for ESADE. Apparently there is sufficient demand and hopefully enough space for these ambitions. There is also a Facebook group called ESADE Entrepreneurship Club, with further links to another website, that provides a platform for entrepreneurs to meet. The group is active and there are several posts with business ideas or concrete projects being realised. Check it out.

In my opinion ESADE should keep that focus on entrepreneurship and strengthen their start-up incubator. I am looking forward to throwing myself in the pool of ESADE entrepreneurship.
