March 11, 2010

This MBA at ESADE has been an incredible and unforgettable experience for all of us. Now is the time look ahead and dive back into the business world and you might as well do that in style.

The Hamburg-based company Papermoles, a famous bookbinding company that produces the folders for some of the most luxurious yachts, restaurants and hotels in Northern Germany, provides a special edition of its leatherfolders to ESADE.

These handmade folders are made of the highest quality upper leather, pure wool for the inside and each one individualised with your name on the front cover. At the end of the day it is all about you and “Enjoy business your way” pretty much says it all.

They are offering us the special edition, which will have black leather on the outside and blue wool on the inside corresponding to the ESADE colors. Each folder will have your name embossed on the front cover and if you wish also the ESADE logo below (for a fee). You can chose between the formats A5 (PortBook) and A4 (PortRing) and the prices will be reduced of course depending on the quantity ordered. Don’t forget that this is the highest German quality.

In case you are interested please drop me an email (here) with your name and size of the folder that you are interested in by Monday evening (15.03.10) and I will organise the folders before graduation. Images of the folders are below.  Check out the entire Papermoles Catalogue (German) in case you want different colors and different products. You can chose among 4 different leather colors and 8 differend wool colors in any combination you wish because it is all about individualism at the end of the day.

I have been using mine for the last year so if you want to see them I am more than happy to show them to you!!!! I am proud of it! I don’t only love my folder ut I have  bought several now…

Room To Read – Twitter Partnership

October 13, 2009

I have been a fan of the NGO Room to Readfor a few years now and I think that the cause they are fighting for is the noblest of all:  Education. In my opinion when you provide education the world will become a better place. This is not philantrophic but illiteracy and lack of education is the origin of many problems. The NGO is stringently run with transparent accounting and minimal overhead at the same time. To find out more about “Room to Read” visit their website here.

The following is an invitation  that Room to Read invites to, which I would like to help them promote. The following content is provided by Room-to-Read:

Student Calamity Fund: Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy)

October 7, 2009
Student led donation drive for the victims of Typhoon Ketsana (also called Typhoon Ondoy) in the Philippines. It is a joint effort of students and alumni all over the world including: Columbia, Harvard, INSEAD, MIT, Stanford, UPenn/Wharton, Audencia Nantes SOM, London Business School, University of New South Wales, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, SMU, IESE, AGSM, Berkeley, Yale, Babson, NYU, ESADE, Tuck, Purdue and others.

More on Typhoon Ketsana:
Sept. 26, 2009 – typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines. The tragedy claimed more than 140 lives and displaced over 430,000 people. It’s the worst flooding recorded in the country since 1967. Manila and surrounding areas were lashed with heavy rains and flash floods for nine hours, leaving some areas under 20 feet of water. The capital and 23 other provinces have been declared under a STATE OF CALAMITY. Many people are missing or trapped and numerous areas are still submerged in floodwater. More than 1.2 million people have no electricity. Victims are in dire need of basic relief goods like food, water and clothing. The death toll is expected to climb, and so are the number of missing and injured.

HOW TO HELP:
The Filipino student community all over the world would like to ask for your help. So far it is best to send international donations through

OPTION 1Ayala Foundation USA by selecting either:
1) “Ateneo Task Force Ondoy c/o OSA and SLB” or
2) “Philippine National Red Cross”
(Note: This is tax deductable in the U.S., if you not from the U.S. the following link will be better www.myayala.com/ondoy)

OPTION 2 - Philippine National Red Cross through:
1) Credit card (http://www.redcross.org.ph/Site/PNRC/Default.aspx?S=48&SS=972) by selecting “Typhoon Ondoy”
2) Paypal (Paypal email address: give@redcross.org.ph)
(Note: For students in other jurisdictions, you may want to check if your specific local Red Cross would better facilitate the tax deductibility. Read comments for more info)

Information on Ayala Foundation USA (AF-USA):
Established in 2000, Ayala Foundation USA is a public charity registered with the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501© 3 tax-exempt organization. As the bridge between US-based Filipino individuals and communities, and Philippine-based social development institutions, AF-USA becomes a mechanism by which donations and other forms of support can reach intended beneficiaries in the Philippines.

Information on Ateneo Task Force Ondoy:
Ateneo de Manila University is a Jesuit institution and one of the largest schools in the Philippines. The school and student body are sending goods to Cainta and Marikina, which are the hardest hit by the typhoon. Watch this video to see what they are doing now http://vimeo.com/6794745

Internationalstudent.com – Scholarship ESADE

June 24, 2009

Mary G. rose my attention to this funny video from a previous ESADE MBA student. The organisation International Student grants scholarship to US citizens who are going to study abroad if they blog, write, video podcast about their experience abroad. The applications tend to be in the form of a video and the following video in 2006 apparently convinced.

Matt Brattin, ESADE Alumni, won the scholarship before coming to ESADE in Spain. Have a look at the video and his winning speech!

Medical Services in Barcelona

May 26, 2009

Covering yourself with medical insurance is the first step and even compulsory to study abroad. I personally chose the insurance DKV as suggested by ESADE. The coverage is rather cheap however the service lacks in many ways. For example the insurance package will not actually be sent to the ESADE campus as promised but you have to go and pick it up from the DKV office itself. That is fair enough but then I have been told that “unless I get a Spanish bank account they will not be able to continue my insurance“, which is completely incomprehensible to me. What does my bank account have to do with my insurance coverage as long as I pay the fee?

Coverage is important but knowing to which doctor or hospital to go, you should inform yourself in advance. DKV insurance actually provides an entire booklet with doctors, which is excellent. Another source of information are the local consulates because they usually provide a list of recommended doctors and/or doctors that speak the respective language. The German Consulate in Barcelona for example recommends the following doctors: download. Check out your local consulate for more information.

Concerning pharmacies you  need not worry because there are almost as many pharmacies in Barcelona as there are banks hence abundantly. I can personally recommend this following pharmacy in the city itself:

Farmacia Casanellas
Llda Maria Teresa Casanellas Marti
Avinyo, 32 – 08002 Barcelona
Tel/Fax: 93 317 91 98

Social Life of ESADE students

March 27, 2009

The first six months of the MBA course are said to be particularly hard and time consuming. However in order for the students not to suffocate of work, the students receive a weekly email proposing social activities, events and secret tips. That means that there is a great equilibrium between the work, student and social life. You just need to take advantage of. I am looking forward to trying it out!!!

Spanish Course – Student Benefit

March 26, 2009

A great benefit for ESADE students who do not speak Spanish is the intense Spanish course free of charge. The classes themselves of the ESADE MBA are in English however it is of vital importance to speak a little bit of Spanish when in Spain and working with Spanish. Therefore ESADE offers an intense Spanish course free of charge to the students and their dependants.

This course for beginners with no prior knowledge of Spanish actually begins prior to the MBA and lasts for two weeks. For those that cannot participate in person, the coordinator will send you by email the material that they have been treating during the class at the end of each day. This is a useful preparation of great use so you can start studying Spanish at your leisure despite not being there.
