La Mercè Festival
September 24, 2009[Update on 26.09.2009: check out the program in English here]
Today is the festival for the Virgin of la Merce, the Patron Saint of Barcelona, is a truelly great experience. (View the history of la Merce here ).Entire Barcelona is celebrating its culture and there is a lot of it everywhere. There are numerous parades in overlarge sizes, fireworks, concerts, the famous human towers (that I have been mentioning several times) and much more. The festival started last night and will continue until Sunday. Head to the city and just let yourself flow with the people and enjoy all those cultural activities.
Every year the festival is dedicated to a partner city and this year the guest and partner of honor is the city Istanbul. Taking advantage of this great occasion some friends and me went to the concert of Baba Zula last night. Have a look at this video to get in the mood:

15th of August – Festes de Gràcia
July 21, 2009Message from Mary G. from the Admissions Team:
Greetings to everyone from Barcelona – welcome to those of you who are on your way or have already arrived!!
August 15th is the first day of a week-long (August 15th – August 21) neighborhood party in Barcelona called “Festes de Gràcia”, in which the Gràcia residents decorate the streets and organize music & events in their famous squares. For the past 4 years, we have organized a welcome dinner for incoming ESADE students, also open to current students in town for the summer, as well as some members of the Admissions team, to kick off the Festes de Gràcia.
Information/pictures from the 2008 event can be found here.
Usually a number of ESADE students, alumni and staff meet before the dinner to take a walk around the decorated streets, and often then find ourselves in the middle of a parade…to later meet the rest of the group at the restaurant. We will keep you posted here at MyESADEMBA.com.

Japanese food for our Japanese friends
July 11, 2009One of the most important and often most difficult aspects of living abroad is the food and cuisine. There is good news for the Japanese students and those that love Japanese cuisine: TOKYO-YA.
Tokyo-ya is a Japanese food specialist where you can get all the important ingredients you need. Check it out for yourself:

Barcelona on two-wheels!
July 3, 2009Quite a few of you are considering renting or buying a scooter or motorbike during your time here in Barcelona. There is a hardly a more liberating feeling than cruising around on two wheels and it is definitely a passion of mine, although I don’t currently ride a motorbike here (yet). However not many are very familiar with riding motorbikes and think that it is as easy as riding a bike, which definitely not true.
I peronally have reasonable experience in riding motorbikes and therefore I would like to just quick remind you of the key issues when riding a motorbike, which the majority of students and friends are disregarding as I can see everyday:
- The most difficult driving is driving in walking pace and not full speed. Practice it!
- Secondly knowing how to breaking is key! It requires a lot of training for the wheels not to lock up.
- Keep the front tyre straight when breaking because the main braking force is on the front tyre. When you front wheel is not straight it will twist and when it twists it will bring you to a “grinding” stillstand, on the ground!!
- When you drive fast and then fall the first thing that touches ground is your chin!!!! Open-face helmets, like the MOMO-Design helmets, might look cool but losing the face from the nose downwards and scraping off the bottom jaw is not cool. I got to see accident photos of that and it is awful to be disfigured for the rest of your life because you wanted to look cool. Buy a helmet with chin protection!
- When you are “lucky” the second body part that touches the ground are your hands! One of our classmates learnt about this the hard way! Wear leather gloves, ALWAYS!
- The third body part touching ground usually are your feet and you will be amazed how easily those toes are ripped off! Wear proper shoes!
- On the road the positioning in the lane is very important and make sure that you always drive in either tyre track and not in the middle. The middle collects dust and dirt. Secondly you have to defend your lane in order not being pushed off your lane by cars. When you are not determined you can easily follow steps 2 – 6 if you are not careful.
- Never break on road markings because they are extremely slippery otherwise you will follow steps 2 – 6 if you are not careful.
Enjoy Barcelona on a two-wheeler but don’t be stupid and dress properly! You wonder what this has to do with a MBA? How do you think most people drive to the school?

Internationalstudent.com – Scholarship ESADE
June 24, 2009Mary G. rose my attention to this funny video from a previous ESADE MBA student. The organisation International Student grants scholarship to US citizens who are going to study abroad if they blog, write, video podcast about their experience abroad. The applications tend to be in the form of a video and the following video in 2006 apparently convinced.
Matt Brattin, ESADE Alumni, won the scholarship before coming to ESADE in Spain. Have a look at the video and his winning speech!

Barcelona – Lost & Found
June 15, 2009In case you ever get robbed, lose your ID or other documents, which happens quite frequently in Barcelona, either you go to any police station or you can do it online. Go to Mossos.net and look for “Denuncies per Internet“, select your language and register your enquiry online.
You can also visit them directly
Mossos d’Esquadra Travessera de les Corts, 319-321 08014 – Barcelona Tel: 088 (free call), 934959700, or 934 959 701I cannot guarantee the correctness of those numbers and they might be subject to change.
Additional note (15.06.09): When you file a loss or theft online you have to actually go to one of the mossos d’esquadra offices in order to validate your report. This can only be signed and verified by the affected person (I found this out the hard way).

Barcelona voted the 15th most liveable city! (FT)
June 14, 2009The Financial Times published one of the liste of the most liveable cities in the world today. Barcelona was not only a newcomer on the list but jumped right up to the 15th place. Isn’t it great living in the 15th most liveable cities in the world?
The ranking was done by Monocle and it is not quite clear to me what were all the parameters taken into consideration but that doesn’t matter. It is great in any case! Viva Barcelona!!! :)
Actually I must say that I am very fortunate to have lived in four of this year’s 25 most liveable cities in the world, two of which I currently live in :)

Operations Club – Step 1
June 12, 2009There are numerous student clubs under the roof of MBASA (ESADE student association) such as the consulting club, marketing club, entrepreneurship club, net impact chapter, renewable energy club etc. however one was missing: Operations Club!
At first we were considering starting a Supply Chain Management Club (SCM) however we quickly realised that it was too specific and our keen interest exceeded SCM. The idea of creating the “Operations Club” was born. We thought it imperative to start this club particulary when taking into consideration that ESADE offers a particular Master of Operations and ESADE ranks 15 globally in Operations Management education.
However we have been experiencing a lot of difficulties starting this club and the bureaucracy of ESADE is showing its ugly side. Not only has the application process to start this club been extremely slow and tedious but no we are even faced with almost unreasonable requirements that we need to fulfill to start this club.
Now we need your support so this initiative can take off and please contact us through LinkedIN if you have an interest in Operations Management and want to join the club (in order to get it started :). This is real intrapreneurship!
The official LinkedIN Group is here.

AlumniTV – Videos of the Alumni Conferences
June 11, 2009I just discovered ESADEAlumni.TV where all the videos of the Alumni events are being posted. The summaries about the ESADE Alumni conferences in April and May 2009 have just been published. Check out the video about the speech about problems in the financial crisis (in Spanish). The videos are hosted by Emprendedorestv.com.

ESADE on the web
June 5, 2009As I have mentioned earlier, ESADE is quite active on the web and uses many new social media tools. Have a look here for a list of the tools used by the marketing team, including twitter, facebook, flickr, bookmarks, widgets, etc.
These are the blogs about ESADE that I know of:
http://eumba.blogspot.com/
http://alleninbcn.blogspot.com/
http://morgans-musings.blogspot.com/
http://myesademba.com (this one obviously)
Special mention needs to go to Morgan Witkin who was featured in the ESADE Newsletter in June 2009 for her blog that was cited by Business Week
First person: Experiencing Barcelona
Deciding to pursue an MBA at ESADE Business School was “an evolution from the life I had been living to a completely new existence”. Read Morgan Witkin’s (current ESADE MBA student) account on her experiences living and studying in Barcelona as published in Business Week.
Do you know any other online material about ESADE?
