The MBA Oath

June 29, 2009

I just received this message on the ESADE LinkedIn Group and I prefer not to comment. This message is not from me. I just copy+pasted it here:

I urge all MBA alumni past and present to please read the MBA Oath and take it.
Please register at :

THE MBA OATH

As a manager, my purpose is to serve the greater good by bringing people and resources together to create value that no single individual can create alone. Therefore I will seek a course that enhances the value my enterprise can create for society over the long term. I recognize my decisions can have far-reaching consequences that affect the well-being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and in the future. As I reconcile the interests of different constituencies, I will face choices that are not easy for me and others.

Therefore I promise:

  • I will act with utmost integrity and pursue my work in an ethical manner.
  • I will safeguard the interests of my shareholders, co-workers, customers and the society in which we operate.
  • I will manage my enterprise in good faith, guarding against decisions and behavior that advance my own narrow ambitions but harm the enterprise and the societies it serves.
  • I will understand and uphold, both in letter and in spirit, the laws and contracts governing my own conduct and that of my enterprise.
  • I will take responsibility for my actions, and I will represent the performance and risks of my enterprise accurately and honestly.
  • I will develop both myself and other managers under my supervision so that the profession continues to grow and contribute to the well-being of society.
  • I will strive to create sustainable economic, social, and environmental prosperity worldwide.
  • I will be accountable to my peers and they will be accountable to me for living by this oath.
  • This oath I make freely, and upon my honor.

Internationalstudent.com – Scholarship ESADE

June 24, 2009

Mary G. rose my attention to this funny video from a previous ESADE MBA student. The organisation International Student grants scholarship to US citizens who are going to study abroad if they blog, write, video podcast about their experience abroad. The applications tend to be in the form of a video and the following video in 2006 apparently convinced.

Matt Brattin, ESADE Alumni, won the scholarship before coming to ESADE in Spain. Have a look at the video and his winning speech!

Electives – Good News

June 23, 2009

After all the turmoil of the last few days there is finally some good news. Despite the error-messages and apologies for having limited seating capacities the electives process has found a positive end it seems. At least for me!

Today I received a message from the course coordinator and apparently all the subjects of my choice have been approved and I have been granted a seat for the respective classes. There are 2-3 minor clashes but I guess they are unavoidable. In comparison with the terms 1 and 2 the calendar for terms 3,4 and 5 looks quite scarce but I can’t complain but having had a lot of spare time until now either.

Thank you very much Cesca and all those involved!

Electives Selection – Take 3

June 22, 2009

Last Friday (19.06.2009) the selection of the electives re-started after the first attempt had already failed miserably due to technical issues. After having worked on the technical side for 2 days the election was restarted with the previous registrations deleted. However after 5min into the start it became apparent that the same problem with the IT system still existed and now half the class could not register the subjects again.

Now after the frustration has been vented and settled over the weekend we are all curious to see whether we got accepted to the courses that we initially applied for in the wake of this week. Limitations in classroom capacities are one thing but not being able to take the subjects for which you took the MBA for in the first place is a whole other game. The suspense remains high.

Electives Selection – Take 2

June 19, 2009

After the first attempt of the elective selection procedure that got all the systems to crash, the second attempt is about to happen in 5min. The system will open up at 12.30pm with close to 160 students ready to log-in. Ready, Set…Go!!!

Term 3,4,5 – Electives Selection Process

June 16, 2009

Today the selection of electives for term 3,4 and 5 has started. There are approximately 50 subjects to chose from, 11 of which are in Spanish. The 3 subjects Strategic Business Simulation, Entrepreneurship and Corporate Citizenship are compulsary and aggregate 8 credit points of the minimum of 24 credit points necessary. We received a booklet with the timetables and syllabi of all subjects.

The art is to select subjects that don’t clash and disperse the subjects across all terms, which is almost impossible. In my case 4 of my most important subjects are clashing, which means a huge frustration.

The selection process is on the intranet and opened up last night at 12am, which turnout to be more than chaotic. In fact the selection module opened up to the students from the 18-month program only and the OY MBA students all misssed out. When it was opened up for us as well almost all classes were full already, mandatory classes included. Fortunately the system has crashed now and all the selected electives will be deleted again and when the selection restarts we will all have equal chances to select the subjects of our choice. What a great experience!!!

Barcelona – Lost & Found

June 15, 2009

In case you ever get robbed, lose your ID or other documents, which happens quite frequently in Barcelona, either you go to any police station or you can do it online. Go to Mossos.net and look for “Denuncies per Internet“, select your language and register your enquiry online.

You can also visit them directly

Mossos d’Esquadra
Travessera de les Corts, 319-321
08014 – Barcelona
Tel: 088 (free call), 934959700, or 934 959 701

I cannot guarantee the correctness of those numbers and they might be subject to change.

Additional note (15.06.09): When you file a loss or theft online you have to actually go to one of the mossos d’esquadra offices in order to validate your report. This can only be signed and verified by the affected person (I found this out the hard way).

Barcelona voted the 15th most liveable city! (FT)

June 14, 2009

The Financial Times published one of the liste of the most liveable cities in the world today. Barcelona was not only a newcomer on the list but jumped right up to the 15th place. Isn’t it great living in the 15th most liveable cities in the world?

The ranking was done by Monocle and it is not quite clear to me what were all the parameters taken into consideration but that doesn’t matter. It is great in any case! Viva Barcelona!!! :)

Actually I must say that I am very fortunate to have lived in four of this year’s 25 most liveable cities in the world, two of which I currently live in :)

Operations Club – Step 1

June 12, 2009

There are numerous student clubs under the roof of MBASA (ESADE student association) such as the consulting club, marketing club, entrepreneurship club, net impact chapter, renewable energy club etc. however one was missing: Operations Club!

At first we were considering starting a Supply Chain Management Club (SCM) however we quickly realised that it was too specific and our keen interest exceeded SCM. The idea of creating the “Operations Club” was born.  We thought it imperative to start this club particulary when taking into consideration that ESADE offers a particular Master of Operations and ESADE ranks 15 globally in Operations Management education.

However we have been experiencing a lot of difficulties starting this club and the bureaucracy of ESADE is showing its ugly side. Not only has the application process to start this club been extremely slow and tedious but no we are even faced with almost unreasonable requirements that we need to fulfill to start this club.

Now we need your support so this initiative can take off and please contact us through LinkedIN if you have an interest in Operations Management and want to join the club (in order to get it started :). This is real intrapreneurship!

The official LinkedIN Group is here.

AlumniTV – Videos of the Alumni Conferences

June 11, 2009

I just discovered ESADEAlumni.TV where all the videos of the Alumni events are being posted. The summaries about the ESADE Alumni conferences in April and May 2009 have just been published. Check out the video about the speech about problems in the financial crisis (in Spanish). The videos are hosted by Emprendedorestv.com.

Dilbert and the Business Life

June 9, 2009

After the financial crisis there are many descriptions about business studies floating around because most of the big business failures where caused by MBA graduates. My favorite one are that MBA stands for “Mediocre But Arrogant” or “Married But Available”. I guess it is important that from time to time you have a good laugh about yourself and I agree that some of the case studies are quite irrelevant for the real business world. The comic artist “Dilbert” created a whole series of comics making fun of MBA students like us and they are hilarious. Check out his blog BEFORE you start your MBA and do it better ;)
