Marketing Club Presentation

May 28, 2009

During the Marketing Club Meeting today the 2 winning teams will present the Novartis Case with which they won Novaris Challenge:

“Open to the leading business schools in Spain, the Master Minds Challenge is an opportunity for MBA candidates to play the role of a Brand Manager at Novartis. The goal of the competition’s first edition was to develop a winning marketing plan leading to market share growth for a dermatological product over a 3 year period.” (Source: ESADE Newsletter, May 2009)

You should attend because some of the winners leave for a term abroad, so this will be the last chance to see their winning presentations. There will many other important topics covered during the meeting such as the election of new Board Members. See you there?

Medical Services in Barcelona

May 26, 2009

Covering yourself with medical insurance is the first step and even compulsory to study abroad. I personally chose the insurance DKV as suggested by ESADE. The coverage is rather cheap however the service lacks in many ways. For example the insurance package will not actually be sent to the ESADE campus as promised but you have to go and pick it up from the DKV office itself. That is fair enough but then I have been told that “unless I get a Spanish bank account they will not be able to continue my insurance“, which is completely incomprehensible to me. What does my bank account have to do with my insurance coverage as long as I pay the fee?

Coverage is important but knowing to which doctor or hospital to go, you should inform yourself in advance. DKV insurance actually provides an entire booklet with doctors, which is excellent. Another source of information are the local consulates because they usually provide a list of recommended doctors and/or doctors that speak the respective language. The German Consulate in Barcelona for example recommends the following doctors: download. Check out your local consulate for more information.

Concerning pharmacies you  need not worry because there are almost as many pharmacies in Barcelona as there are banks hence abundantly. I can personally recommend this following pharmacy in the city itself:

Farmacia Casanellas
Llda Maria Teresa Casanellas Marti
Avinyo, 32 – 08002 Barcelona

As an entrepreneur it is of pivotal importance to know the scene, other entrepreneurs and to network and therefore I strongly suggest that you try to make it to the event. The event cannot be booked in advance anymore however you should try to get tickets immediately there. Check it out!

Barcelona on a scooter

May 17, 2009

Spring is providing us with a first glimpse of what summer will be like in Barcelona and all of a sudden everybody thinks “scooter”. Now that the first colleagues have gotten their own scooters and motorbikes, incl. the first punctures, I thought it would be a good time to show you a special offer that Cooltra Scooters made to ESADE students.

Cooltra is providing exclusive offers to ESADE where the scooters only cost €170 for three months rental and 150€ for 6 months rental with free insurance (VAT excl.) The also sell old-school scooters under www.cooltra-vintage.com (@cooltra please correct me if i am wrong).

Give them a call (+34-902050679). Feel free to tell us about other deals that you have seen in Barcelona.

For those of you that want a “real” motorbike check out the local Royal Enfiled store ;)

Relocation to Barcelona

May 7, 2009

Let’s talk about living and moving to Barcelona.

I have received numerouus enquiries about how and where to find apartments and therefore I would like to highlight a few things.

The people from the current 18month program are not actually leaving in September but in April 2010 same as the students from the 12month program. Therefore the class starting in August 2009 cannot just take over the apartments from them unfortunately. However there are good chances that a few students of the 18months-program are going away for internships or exchange programs so there will potentially be some vacant rooms. I will try to assist in the communication between the incoming and outgoing students as good as I can.

With regards to the locations there are many opinions about where to go and I can only give you my perception. I enjoy living close to the school so that I can walk! If you are not that fortunate and need to commute you should be aware of the following. The metro “Maria Cristina” is further away than you think and most people rely on the bus network, which is excellent!!! Check out locations for your apartments that are along the bus lines 22, 78, 63, 75 and 68 instead of only Metro Line 3! For more information about the public transport check out TMB.

Concerning the relocation company “Olympic“, that has been working with ESADE until now, there will be changes. There is a rumor that the contract will expire and ESADE will not continue to work with them in the future. However some of the current students have found some excellent apartments through Olympic.

There is however a new relocation service provided by an ESADE alumni (as mentioned earlier) that I would like to remind you of. Please find the email that was sent to us hereto below:

Please contact Michael Corcoran, a recent ESADE MBA 2009 graduate, for access to ideal apartments for incoming ESADE students. He is offering customised leases in association with BornLiving, a reputable real estate agent in Barcelona. The relocation package is designed to directly suit the needs of an ESADE MBA. He will be personally managing the process from end to end for the incoming Masters students.

For more details see their site at: http://www.bornliving.com/services/graduate/

Contact him at: graduate@bornliving.com or call me on +34 695 153 968

All the best for you relocation to Barcelona!

Preparation: Equipment and Books

May 5, 2009

Every time you go abroad or move away you are faced with the issue of deciding what to bring. With this post I am trying to clarify some of your questions:

- ESADE provides you with a welcome package that includes all the books that are required by the syllabus. For additional readings you have the library in Building 2, which is 5mins walk from building 3.

- Calculator: ESADE will provide you with a financial calculator (we got the HP 10bll Financial Calculator)  so you don’t need to get a new one on your own.

- Filing and Organisation! You will be flooded by paper because each professor hands out tons of documents: case studies, syllabus, additional readings, powerpoint slides. Make sure that you have/get/bring a BIG holepuncher (> 20-30 pages) because the stacks are big and it is very painful when you have no holepuncher or one that is too small.

- There is no stationary shop on campus so be organised and bring/buy notepads, folders, pens, etc. because you will not be able to buy anything on campus (as of today).

What else could be interesting for you to know? Let me know if you have any further questions about what to bring.
