HumanTower – World record attempt

April 30, 2009

I have previously written about our group-building activity of building a humantower in Villafranca. Our entire class went to Vilafranca, a city 30min drive from Barcelona, to learn about this “sport” from the world record holders themselves: the Castellers de Vilafranca“. We found this brilliant video, which shows the club’s world record attempt in 2008. It is impressive!

Beware the perils of a lee shore

April 27, 2009

It’s fair to say that the first outing by some of the One-Year MBA students didn’t end all that well as the photos after the link show. For the record it was the owner of the boat at the helm when we ran aground (click here for location)! Fortunately there were no injuries and the boat was safely pulled off the beach the following morning.

Spanish Courses

April 27, 2009

This week the assessable courses begin. One of these subjects is the compulsary Spanish course. In order to determine the Spanish level of each student, they will perform a Spanish proficiency test in order to classify each member into the respective Spanish class. Don’t forget to bring the headphones for the Spanish test because it will be computer-based.

Native speakers have been given the choice to learn German or French instead in order to make best use of the ESADE facilities and that they don’t sit empty-handed throughout the afternoon.

!Additional Note!

You can find this internet-based exam for testing your Spanish level at the following address: http://ave.cervantes.es/

Pre-MBAT Soccer Match: ESADE vs. IESE

April 26, 2009

This day will go down in the history of the ESADE vs. IESE soccer rivalry. Today ESADE beat IESE in soccer for the first time ever.

As the 19th MBATournament (MBAT) at HEC in Paris, France, is coming up soon (7-10 May 2009), ESADE and IESE decided to play a friendly soccer match today at 14h at Can Caralleu. ESADE was clearly the underdog as they hadnever trained together, players were absent and they had never won a match against IESE and therefore this day was not very promising. When the players of ESADE slowly trickled in, was the IESE team already in the midst of doing a nicely coordinated warm-up, dressed in IESE uniforms and union. Intimated? No need!

The first half was a bit rough when IESE led by 2:0 however the ESADE team found its unity and strength shortly afte and powered through the second half. Well what is there to say and I rather let the final score speak for itself:

ESADE vs. IESE 3:2

It seems that uniforms, weekly training and a coach don’t make a good team when you lack talent ;)Good job, ESADE!! May the skill be with you at the MBAT!!

Competition & Strategy Week

April 22, 2009

This entire week is dedicated to “Competition and Strategy”. To kick off the MBA this intensive course about strategy attempts to give us rather  strategic approach and h9listic view for our studies.

It is interesting to be given the theory of strategies, like the Porter Model, combined with real life examples (Apple, Google, etc.)  which are not only a useful tool for the MBA itself but also for the Post-MBA times. Among other things we have also received guest lecturers or presentations of Xavier Mir and Feargal Mac Conluadth, who have contributed a large range of international and personal experiences to the class room. It is worthwile to check out their profiles because they are very interesting characters.

Hola OneYear MBA Class of 2010! Bienvenidos a ESADE!

We will be offering apartments in ideal locations with customised/flexible leases for MBAs, and great discounts including a large discount on scooters if you decide to relocate with us. The agency fee is 1 months rent, which is the lowest rate on the market here.

Orientation Week

April 19, 2009

Last week has been rather short but the more busy. On Tuesday Orientation week started, which launched an important chapter in all our MBA and post-MBA lives. We got to meet our peers! To briefly give you an glimpse of the diversity of the One Year MBA Class of 2010, the profiles are the following:

  • 40 students
  • 20 nationalities
  • Average age: 30 years
  • Average work experience: 7.5 years
  • 19 languages

This week was never short of group-building activities and we did everything from blindfolding others, paintballing, humantower-building (in Villafrance) to going “socialising”, which I guess most call drinking. The week was full of exciting activities and I would never have wanted to miss it and therefore you should make sure that you reach Barcelona in time because it is vital to meet your fellow students before the seriousness starts.

The second objective of the week was the Career Services and recruitment strategies. ESADE prides itself to be among the leading career service providers among the top-ranked MBA schools (view rankings here). We had intensive sessions on CV and Cover Letter writing, self marketing and self-assessments with peers. It is very helpful to be confronted with expert advise who are specialised in the HR and recruitment industry and therefore definitely worthwile. We will explain the career services in details at a later stage.

Overall the Orientation Week was a great success and ended nicely with the Poker/Welcoming Party. In my opinion it was important to meet everyone in a social environment and now it is time to get ready to perform. Tomorrow the courses begin.
