Social Life of ESADE students

March 27, 2009

The first six months of the MBA course are said to be particularly hard and time consuming. However in order for the students not to suffocate of work, the students receive a weekly email proposing social activities, events and secret tips. That means that there is a great equilibrium between the work, student and social life. You just need to take advantage of. I am looking forward to trying it out!!!

Spanish Course – Student Benefit

March 26, 2009

A great benefit for ESADE students who do not speak Spanish is the intense Spanish course free of charge. The classes themselves of the ESADE MBA are in English however it is of vital importance to speak a little bit of Spanish when in Spain and working with Spanish. Therefore ESADE offers an intense Spanish course free of charge to the students and their dependants.

This course for beginners with no prior knowledge of Spanish actually begins prior to the MBA and lasts for two weeks. For those that cannot participate in person, the coordinator will send you by email the material that they have been treating during the class at the end of each day. This is a useful preparation of great use so you can start studying Spanish at your leisure despite not being there.

Networking and Social Media

March 18, 2009

One of the main reasons to start the MBA is arguably to expand the personal and professional network. During the Open Day in January 2009 ESADE has presented itself to undertake numerous measures to strengthen this connection among students, one of which would have to be the extensive team work in the classrooms itself. Presentations and team projects are said to be structured in a way that it is never apparent beforehand who will be presenting in the end. Every team member needs to be prepared to such depth that each one could hold the presentation and represent the teamwork at any point in time. This uncertainty unites the team in a unique fashion because the strongest will always have to support the weakest in order to survive. Nobody will be left behind and students work together instead of against each other.

The social networking among the students is highly important as well because in order for a relationship to last, the students must be wanting to stay in touch with one another. Usually the first encounter and interaction of the students is the Introductory Week prior to the course begin however a new trend has come to my attention. The power of the social networking tools on the internet has accelerated this process and most of the students are already in touch before heading to Barcelona. Facebook seems to be the most used social platform for ESADE students at the moment to facilitate this interaction. Almost every MBA intake has its own Facebook Group where the members are actively interacting and sharing information, especially regarding accomodation arrangements, transport, mobile phone offers and other useful subject (Check out the ESADE bookmarks on Delicious). Have a look at the group at the ESADE One Year MBA Class 2010 and you will see what I mean. ESADE is also using  twitter, a microblogging tool, to communicate news.

Administrative Formalities

March 16, 2009

Moving to a new city and starting a MBA program abroad requires significant preparation and things to consider. After have been accepted to ESADE for example, you will be required to submit the acceptance letter, letter of undertaking and a financial plan to start off with. These are more than legal formalities but rather a good starting point to financially structure your coming year. After having reserved your place with the deposit payment you will receive a welcome email with access to the intranet, which gives you excellent access and overview to all the information that you will be requiring throughout the MBA program.

In addition you will have to arrange numerous things for your private move to Barcelona, which shall be well planned, too. Probably most of your have already moved abroad several times in the past but I would like to list a few things to remind you:

  • Terminate your lease agreement or sublease the apartment in your resident country (garage, parking lot, etc.)
  • Unregister at the local authories and apply for a NIE number (Número de Identidad/Identificación de Extranjero) a foreign resident ID, in Spain
  • Change or update your medical insurance (ESADE can help you with a local Spanish insurance)
  • Set-up a mail-forwarding order at your local post office
  • Prepare your tax declaration for last year prior to your departure (even if the end of financial year is not imminent)
  • Prepare a list of things/furniture/clothing that you wish to bring along. Arong for storage if need be.
  • Print out your new addresses, maps, important contacts, etc. prior to leaving in case you don’t have access to a printer upon arrival.

You should also consider to change or terminate the following contracts:

  • Cellphone/fixedline/internet contract, gym membership, water/heating/electricity supplier (don’t forget to read the meter before leaving), newspaper, car registration & insurance, insurances, etc.

Update your contact information for following services:

  • bank, medical insurance, email-provide, website provider, professional networks (xing, linkedin, etc.), relatives & friends (consider to use auto-update programs such as Plaxo), etc.

Good resources of information about a new city or country are usually the expatriat websites for a particular city or country as well: Spain Expat, Expat Blog, Expatica, etc. Feel free to contribute anything here that you consider worthwile adding.

Blogroll & Bookmarks

March 6, 2009

As some of you might have seen I am adding links to the blogroll as well as bookmarks. Among these links is the delicious bookmarking link for MyESADEMBA. In order for this blog to be a resource for ESADE students and potential students I am aggregating links that help you to familiarise yourself with ESADE. I recently added the ESADENews Twitter for example that keeps you up to date about ESADE on a daily basis. Feel free to add links that you find help to settling in Barcelona or when joining ESADE.

ESADE Entrepreneurship

March 5, 2009

During the ESADE OpenDay at the end of January 2009 it became apparent that there is a large shift in future employment trends. What used be the ladder to the Management Consultancy, the MBA apparently has evolved to become the breeding ground for start-ups. The Financial Crisis most probably has had its fair impact on that trend, shifting the student’s interest from Finance to Business, which is a very positive side-effect from the crisis.

Some of the applicants have even mentioned that they are preparing to set-up their business after the MBA, which is a good sign and speaks for ESADE. Apparently there is sufficient demand and hopefully enough space for these ambitions. There is also a Facebook group called ESADE Entrepreneurship Club, with further links to another website, that provides a platform for entrepreneurs to meet. The group is active and there are several posts with business ideas or concrete projects being realised. Check it out.

In my opinion ESADE should keep that focus on entrepreneurship and strengthen their start-up incubator. I am looking forward to throwing myself in the pool of ESADE entrepreneurship.

Accomodation in Barcelona

March 3, 2009

Accomodation is always an important topic when moving from city to city. According to my friends, the web and my network Loquo Barcelona seems to be “the place to find a place” online. Here you can meet others who share, rent or sell apartments. There is also an English section, in case you do not speak Spanish or Catalan.

When chosing an apartment you should always consider the proximity to the ESADE itself, public transport and social and shopping facilities. Here you can find a map of Barcelona itself as well as the public transport (in pdf).

Other useful addresses are agents:
